Cycling with Purpose: The Battlefield Ride in the Netherlands
Heidi Mierau recently traveled to the Netherlands to participate in the Battlefield Bike Ride with Magic Places Cycling and it was an unforgettable experience.
This year’s ride commemorated the 80th anniversary of the Liberation of the Netherlands, a moment in history when Canadian soldiers played a major role in reclaiming Holland from German occupation during WWII. To this day, Canadian and Dutch flags often fly side by side, a symbol of gratitude and enduring friendship. The warm reception riders receive in the Netherlands is something that leaves a lasting impression on everyone who takes part.
The Battlefield Ride isn’t just about cycling, it’s also a charity event in support of Wounded Warriors Canada, a non-profit dedicated to supporting ill and injured members of the Canadian Armed Forces, RCMP, First Responders and their families. Since 2014, Magic Places has partnered with Wounded Warriors to host this special 5-day, 400 km journey. The ride follows the routes of Canadian soldiers, blending powerful historical storytelling with beautiful countryside roads and an incredible sense of camaraderie.
For everyone involved, the Battlefield Bike Ride is more than just kilometers on the bike. It’s a moving reminder of the sacrifices that shaped our history, the resilience of those who served, and the gratitude that continues to live on today in the Netherlands.
Blending endurance, history, and purpose, this ride is a powerful way to honour Canada’s legacy while supporting the vital work of Wounded Warriors Canada. It’s an experience that leaves riders inspired, connected, and proud to be part of something bigger than themselves. Definitely check out Magic Places Battlefield Bike Ride if you are interested in joining next year.
